How effective is barbed wire as a defense? (2021)

What even is the barbed wire?

Barbed wire, also known as barb wire, is a type of steel fence wire with sharp edges or points arranged at intervals along its length. Used in fences and atop walls surrounding secured properties, it is inexpensive.

Barbed wire is considered to be a form of fencing that was created before 1863 by several individuals. However, none of these creations were ever mass-produced. In 1863 by Michael Kelly, an Illinois farmer developed a type of fence with points affixed to twisted strands of wire to protect his farm from animals.

He had his invention properly promoted, he could have gained distinction as the Father of Barbed Wire. Ten years later, another inventor filed a patent that would eventually lead to the development of the barbed wire industry.

The primary purpose of a fencing system is to create a boundary, a barrier against intruders, burglars, and stray animals. Security fences prioritize privacy, safety, and security. Today, there is a wide variety of fences available that may meet your goal of increasing security. Some fences are quite stylish, while others are quite plain. Barb wire fencing is a common and popular form of fencing. In a barb wire fence, the wires are twisted together to make a cord that projects from the fence at short distances of 5 to 6 inches. Fences like this keep animals away that would otherwise find a way through your fence.

If someone comes in contact with it, it is painful and will likely break your skin or puncture it. That causes cuts, bleeding, and possibly infection, as the steel used is often rusty and not sterile.

Why choose barbed wire over other fencing materials?

Barbwire provides almost Impenetrable Protection, without special tools simply cannot cross the fence. To increase the security even further electrical power supply could be added to the fence.

Fences made of barbed wire are highly versatile. It is widely used in residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, transportation, sports, leisure, play areas, buildings, and homes. Commercial property owners primarily use this kind of fence to prevent robberies and unauthorized entry during late hours.

The major benefit of a barb-wire fence is that it is one of the most cost-effective fences on the market today. Not only its installation is inexpensive, but its maintenance is also easy and the protection it offers is unmatched. Barbed wire fencing is widely used by homeowners because of its lower cost and reliable protection. With this type of fencing installed, intruders will have a much harder time getting inside your fenced property.

The GI Barb wire is considered to be the most common among all, while PVC coated is mainly used in coastal regions or places where the humidity is very high to avoid rusting. Polymer Barb Wires are used where the fencing is to be done in remote areas and the high life of the product is desired.
GI Barb Wires Fence comes in the following sizes :

How to make a fence from barbed wire?

  1. Select end and corner locations.
  2. Install 6″ × 8′ wood post-H-Brace assembly for ends and double corner H-Brace assemblies for corners. Should be installed on the ground.
  3. 3.5′ to 4′ leaving 4′ out of ground adjust post length if the taller fence is required.
Carefully unroll the end of 4′ to 8′ of barbed wire and fasten by wrapping around starting post and back onto itself at the desired height for the lowest strand.
  4. Carefully unroll the barbed wire to end the offense.
  5. Tension wire with Chain Wire Strainer at the end. Cut the wire to length and fasten the wire at desired height as done at the beginning.
  6. Cut the barbed wire to length and fasten the wire as done at the beginning.
  7. The first wire should be adjusted (to obtain a straight line) along the fence line with light tension by picking wire up to a height of 4′ to 6′ then dropping wire. This process should be repeated until a straight line from beginning to end is achieved. This process will allow the wire to fall creating a straight line for the fence to follow.
  8. Using the first wire as a straight line, install line posts (wood or steel) at 15′ to 20′ apart, adjusting distance as necessary. (High-pressure fences like feedlots will need heavier posts, closer together.)
  9. Fasten the barbed wire to T post with wire clip (usually provided with new T posts) and/or staple barbed wire to wood posts leaving room for the wire to “float” when stapled (Do not staple wire tight to post.)
  10. When installing line posts make sure that any post that will have strain (vertical or horizontal) on it is stout and secure enough to take the strain. As in wood post 5″ to 6″ × 8′ (multiples if necessary) in dips or other low areas and on crowns or high areas.
  11. Repeat the necessary process for additional wires.

Barbed wire is an effective material that can be used to provide safety from wild animals and intruders to some extent to improve the safety even more one can add electricity to the fences. Overall it’s a great value for money, easy to install with zero to no maintenance, and a life of over 15-20 years.
